NTWAB Members Land AHP Media Awards
NTWAB members associated with BloodHorse and Mid-Atlantic Thoroughbred received numerous honors from the American Horse Publications Media Awards, which recognized the contest winners in Tempe, Ariz., during the association's annual conference last week. The awards were for material published in 2022.
BloodHorse editorial director Frank Angst received first place in the breaking news/investigative reporting single article category for a feature about the initial impact on racing following the phase-out of race-day furosemide (Lasix) with 2-year-olds and in graded stakes. The feature, "Initial Impact of Lasix-Free Racing," appeared in BloodHorse's March 2022 edition.
"Such a complex topic and the data is daunting, yet the author did a nice job organizing a herd of stats into a cohesive story," a judge commented.
BloodHorse.com was given first-place honor for being the equine industry's leading website among the entities that belong to AHP. NTWAB member Claire Crosby was BloodHorse editorial director in 2022.
Second-place honors went to freelance writer and NTWAB member Julie June Stewart for her feature in BloodHorse named "Complementary Colors" about grade 1-winning owner Sandra Oppegard enjoying a life of horses and art in the Self-Supported Equine Media Personality Profile Single Article category.
Stewart's magazine feature "Powerful Portrait" about Lance G. Newman II's artwork telling the story of slave-turned-horse-trainer Eliza "Aunt Eliza" Carpenter was recognized with a third-place honor in the Freelance Writer Equine Journalism Article category and with an honorable mention in the Self-Supported Media Personality Profile category. That piece was also published by BloodHorse.
NTWAB member Joe Clancy authored "Dreaming of a Reset for Racing" for Mid-Atlantic Thoroughbred, which landed a second-place finish in the Personal Column Single Article category.
