On Feb. 10, the National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA), Daily Racing Form, and the National Turf Writers and Broadcasters (NTWAB) announced during the 51st Eclipse Awards presented by 1/ST Racing and FanDuel Racing Group, that Knicks Go, who captured both the Pegasus World Cup (G1) and the Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1), was voted the 2021 Horse of the Year.
The ceremony at Santa Anita Park, timed in about an hour and 46 minutes, was hosted by Acacia Courtney, Britney Eurton, Gabby Gaudet and Michelle Yu.

Knicks Go
was consistent throughout 2021, flashing speed and daring his competition to pass him at the highest levels. They rarely did. He captured both the Pegasus World Cup (G1) and the Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) in front-running fashion. He was bred in Maryland by Angie Moore and owned by Korea Racing Authority. Brad Cox trained Knicks Go to tops in earnings.
Knicks Go received 228 votes out of a possible 235 first-place votes for Horse of the Year. Knicks Go, a gray son of Paynter, was also voted Champion Older Dirt Male. Racing as a 5-year-old in 2021, Knicks Go won five races in seven starts, which also included victories in the Prairie Meadows Cornhusker Handicap (G3), the Whitney (G1) at Saratoga, and the Lukas Classic at Churchill Downs. He culminated his season with a 2 3/4-length victory in the Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic.
Corniche (Quality Road-Wasted Tears) won the Eclipse Award as top Two-Year-Old Male after an undefeated campaign culminating in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1). Owned by Speedway Stables LLC, bred in Kentucky by Bart Evans & Stonehaven Steadings, and trained by Bob Baffert.
Unbeaten in four starts, Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) winner
Echo Zulu (Gun Runner-Letgomyecho) is top Two-Year-Old Filly. Trained by Steve Asmussen for owner L and N Racing and Winchell Thoroughbreds; bred in Kentucky by Betz/J. Betz/Burns/CHNNHK/Magers/CoCo Equine/Ramsby.
The Three-Year-Old Male champion is
Essential Quality (Tapit-Delightful Quality), also the 2020 juvenile male champ. Owned and bred in Kentucky by Godolphn, he won the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes, Belmont Stakes and Travers Stakes (all G1) and Jim Dandy Stakes (G2) for trainer Brad Cox.
Malathaat (Curlin-Dreaming of Julia) got the Eclipse for best Three-Year-Old Filly. Trained by Todd Pletcher, owned by Shadwell Stable and bred in Kentucky by Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings, five Grade 1 races yielded wins in the Ashland Stakes, Kentucky Oaks and Alabama Stakes.
Knicks Go (Paynter-Kosmo's Buddy) is Older Dirt Male winner after book-ending his year with wins in the Pegasus Stakes (G1) and Breeders' Cup Classic (G1). Bred in Maryland by Angie Moore and owned by Korea Racing Authority, Brad Cox trained Knicks Go to tops in earnings in 2021.
Letruska (Super Saver-Magic Appeal) took Older Dirt Female honors after reeling off wins of four Grade 1's (Apple Blossom, Ogden Phipps, Personal Ensign & Spinster) and a Grade 2 in five consecutive starts. Owned and bred by St. George Stables, she remains in training by Fausto Gutierrez.
Top Male Sprinter is
Jackie's Warrior (Maclean's Music-Unicorn Girl), whose wins included the Pat Day Mile (G2), Amsterdam Stakes (G2), Allen Jerkens Memorial (G1) and Gallant Bob Stakes (G2) for trainer Steve Asmussen J. Kirk and Judy Robison own; bred in Kentucky by J & J Stables.
Ce Ce (Elusive Quality-Miss Houdini), shortened up in distance from her 2020 campaign, finished 2021 with a bang in the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint (G1) for owner-breeder Bo Hirsch and trainer Mike McCarthy. The Kentucky-bred won four of five sprint starts last year and is recipient of the Female Sprinter Eclipse.
The Male Turf Horse champion is
Yibir (GB) (Dubawi [IRE]-Rumh [GER]). After competing in Great Britain in spring-summer, he crossed the pond to win the Jockey Club Derby Invitational (black type) on the east coast and Longines Breeders' Cup Turf (G1) on the west coast for owner-breeder Godolphin. Trained by Charles Appleby.
Japanese invader
Loves Only You (Deep Impact [JPN]-Loves Only Me), tops in the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf (G1) in her sole career start on U.S. soil, is the top Female Turf Horse. Trained by Yoshito Yahagi, her owner is DMM Dream Club. She was bred by Northern Farm.
The Mean Queen (IRE) (Doyen [IRE]-Gail Borden [IRE],is Steeplechase Horse champion. The first female winner of the Grand National (G1) in nearly a century, she's only the second female to win this award. Trained by Keri Brion, owned by Buttonwood Farm and bred by Kevin Purfield.
Godolphin, as expected, is champion Owner. The outfit established a single-season record as the leading owner by earnings, per Equibase, with 84 North American wins from 479 starts and $17,403,204 in earnings, eclipsing $12.2 million in 2013 earned by Ken and Sarah Ramsey.
Godolphin was also named top Breeder at the Eclipse Awards. With $18,447,150 in earnings per The Jockey Club Information Systems, Godolphin bred 172 starters with 136 wins, 126 seconds, and 115 thirds out of 804 starts.
Brad Cox was named Trainer of the year after amassing 1,015 starts, 267 wins (a 26 percent rate), 189 seconds, 143 thirds and earnings of $31,733,745. Cox trained Eclipse winners Knicks Go and Essential Quality.
Joel Rosario
is the top Jockey at the Eclipse Awards and for good reason. From 1,083 mounts he had 228 winners along with 163 place and 153 show finishes. Horses he rode won$32,944,478. His 49 graded stakes wins included victories by Knicks Go, Echo Zulu and Jackie's Warrior.
The Eclipse-winning Apprentice Jockey is
Jessica Pyfer, 23. Based in southern California, she led all apprentice jockeys in earnings with $2,738,863 and was second in wins, with 56 from 535 starts.
Earle Mack received an Eclipse Award of Merit for Lifetime Achievement. Breeding and racing Thoroughbreds since 1963, he's accounted for 25 stakes winners. He served on the NYRA Board (1990–2004) and was Chairman of the NY State Racing Commission (1983–1989). He served as a member of the New York State Thoroughbred Racing Capital Investment Fund (1987–1996), was on the Board of Directors of the New York State Thoroughbred Breeding and Development Fund (1983–1989), and was Senior Advisor on Racing and Breeding in the New York Thoroughbred Industry. The Earle I. Mack Thoroughbred Champion Award has been presented annually since 2011 to an individual for outstanding efforts and influence on Thoroughbred racehorse welfare, safety, and retirement.
Justin Mustari was presented an Eclipse Award as 2021 Horseplayer of the Year. At age 26 he topped a field of 563 entries to win the National Horseplayers Championship. Mustari, who works for his father Frank’s insulation contracting company, is the youngest NHC winner.
